From what I’m told, these weather windows don’t come often, if ever, for a non local. A perfectly clear & windless day in around Mount St Elias. It was so green that is nearly looked tropical. Every crack or weakness in the rock & glacial moraine turned to a powerful waterfall. Days like this take my appreciation for flying to another level & the memory cards fill up fast.

Workers load giant logs from shore to ship in Kisangani, the central DRC city along the Congo River. From here, timber and charcoal gathered from surrounding forests and villages heads towards Kinshasa by boat or Mombasa by road, and on to the rest of the world.

The first time I went backpacking, I had to borrow everything. I used an external frame pack and sleeping bag/pad that were ancient and weighed who knows how much. And then when I finally did get my own gear, it was still pre-owned and quite heavy, and for the longest time, I didn’t even know the difference! As long as I had the basics to get me into the mountains, that was all I cared about. Fast-forward a few years, and I finally started learning how much of a difference lightweight/better-fitting gear actually makes. It’s taken me years, but I’ve replaced my original setup with gear that works better for me and has saved a ton of weight.
I know quality outdoor gear can get expensive, which is why I wanted to mention that @backcountry is having some big sales right now that could help out with updating old items in your gear closet. I’m highlighting a few of my go-to pieces for backpacking in today’s story if you need any ideas! And of course, don’t forget to use code ELISE15 if you’d like 15% off any full priced items on your first order! *some exclusions apply* #findyourbackcountry #sponsored

After a storm comes a calm...
Dug this one up from the archives. We had planned on a big ridge traverse that day, but weather came in and forced us to slow down and watch the storm instead.
Just added this one to the print shop this morning. I’ve also reduced my print prices by 50% (to make photography and art more accessible to people financially hurt by the Covid crisis) and will be donating 100% of print sales this month to The Mindstrength Project in order to continue to bring online mental health/wellness services to the public. Link in bio! šŸŒˆšŸ’™

The more things change the more they stay the same. I first saw Do the Right Thing when I was 15. It opened up my mind and inspired me to get into photography and film making. For those who haven't seen it, quite scrolling and go find it online. It's just as relevant in 2020 as when it came out in 1989. Anyone that knows me closely, knows that I'm a contrarian and love pointing out virtue signaling and talking shit about thinly disguised advertisements as a way for corporations to latch on to a cause.

Anyone that knows me closely, knows that I'm a contrarian and love pointing out virtue signaling and talking shit about thinly disguised advertisements as a way for corporations to latch on to a cause. "The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members," is a quote that always resonated with me. As Americans, we are failing to take care of our most vulnerable peers. America has the highest incarceration rates in the world. We disproportionally lock up and kill African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans at alarming rates. Suicide amongst these same demographics is heartbreakingly high. One of my biggest qualms with social media is that I don't think it actually changes people's minds. Thanks to Facebook, Twitter and Google's algorithms, we more often the not shout into the ether of the internet and only the people that already agree respond. This is where music, films, and books comes in. Art opens people's mind and allows them to see an issue from a new perspective. As a 15 year old white kid from Oregon, watching and rewatching Do The Right Thing opened my eyes to the complexity and horror of police brutality and the music of Public Enemy. Maybe it will open up your mind or someone you care about too #radiorahem #ericgarner #georgeffloy #tamirrice #breonnataylor

Step into the light ✨ It’s hard to believe that this photo was taken in Aruba. There’s really no place like it where you have some of the bluest waters in the world along with spots like this hidden throughout its desert landscapes. Everyday felt like a new adventure here. There’s so much more to explore here and I can’t wait to visit again one day. #clifadventureambassador

It’s #worldelephantday and every year now, on this day, I’m taken back to the extraordinary experience I had in Kenya in 2017 helping to bring awareness to the important work of saving the African 🐘 that the orgs >> tagged in these photos << are doing.
.
Before that trip I had no idea the rates at which elephants are hunted and slaughtered for the ivory in their tusks. How in danger these majestic, gentle giants are from humans. Or how smart and empathetic they are. How much their society depends on their matriarchs. How they sometimes travel thousands of miles to mourn their dead in the same spot one passes away. How they never forget.
.
I’ve wrote an extensive post about it on my blog and interviewed Paula Kahumbu for a video that’s on my YouTube if you’d like to hear her. She’s far more eloquent than I could ever be. I’ll link to both in Stories. She and the women and men of Amboseli have dedicated their lives to saving elephants. Even naming every elephant in the park. The least I can do is talk about that, today. And if you have money to give, please consider donating. The pandemic has made it harder than ever to keep elephants safe in Africa. But support helps keep it possible. And it also helps ensure Kenyan’s can make a living not from exploiting wildlife or continuing to allow poaching, but instead protecting the 🐘 and other wild animals. ā¤ļø

Front row seats to the greatest show on earth šŸæ. This year has certainly been full of surprises. It’s made me slow down and reevaluate so many different parts of my life. Little did I know, these months would prove to be some of the most invaluable of my life. I’ve been able to find so many ways to improve myself both mentally and physically during this time at home. Creativity is one of those things that requires you to take a step back in order to reflect on what your ultimate goal is. Whether you’re at home finding new sources of inspiration in familiar things or stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something completely new, there’s so many ways for you to stay inspired and get creative. When you get the cenote all to yourself šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼ā£
⁣
Staying afloat in fresh water while somehow trying to keep the camera half above and half underwater was tougher than I thought! Going through these photos was hilarious seeing the progression of the water taking over while @alexinwanderland and I kept sinking under while trying to take pics of each other.⁣
⁣
I love the way it turned out, the light spilling in from the ceiling casting such a perfect spotlight on the swing and that clear aquamarine water.

Summer 2020 is cancelled! 😢😫
.
I was supposed to spend 3 months in Central Asia.
.
But like most of Europeans, I had no choice but to adapt my summer plans and travel locally.
Or at least not too far from home.
.
In fact, I'm actually excited about what's coming up.
.
Today, I’m hitting the road with my trusty Toyota Hilux for the 3rd summer, as Del & I are going to travel to European countries we have yet to visit, since I’ve started my Peaks of Europe project in 2017 (Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria are the first stops).
.
Because of this unique situation we’ve all had to experience, I'd like to support you somehow.
.
For a very limited time only, I'm offering you the BEST of my book 'PEAKS OF EUROPE' in an exclusive ebook version, all for free!
.
This, I hope, will help many of you discover new places in Europe instead of traveling to the other side of the world.
.
2,000+ people downloaded it in less than 24 hours, when I released it a week ago, so I guess it should interest you too!
.
A 160-page ebook, full of travel & photography tips about the most emblematic regions of Europe.
You'll also find exact locations and GPS coordinates of my favorite spots.
And a whole lot of inspiration for your week-end adventures or longer road trips, of course 😃
.
You can download your free ebook and start planning your next adventure now, by following the link in bio (https://shop.johanlolos.com/free-ebook)
.
Happy summer to y’all! Enjoy! 😃🤟

You responded to my poll & questions in Stories saying you’re interested in ideas for road trip travel, that you’re planning to take a road trip or want to be given ideas of places you can visit responsibly when it’s possible for you to do so. So when I was given the opportunity to test drive a Lincoln for a week, I knew immediately that I wanted to head to Sonoma. Not only are they a destination that relies on tourism and I felt called to support that but also for a long time I’ve been hearing about the partnership between @kindtraveler and @sonomacounty to promote responsible travel. I wanted to see for myself what that looks like. 🌻 Kind is a give + get booking platform and reserving your hotel stays with them, gives directly to organizations that have a net positive impact on local communities around the world. But in Sonoma the partnership goes a bit deeper. 🌲 It’s the perfect compliment to @SonomaCounty’s status as a DSO (destination stewardship organization). Most tourism boards are run as DMOs (destination management organization) and while that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it doesn’t tend to have on average as net positive an impact as a DSO could and does. šŸŒŽ Just the difference in the meanings of the words stewardship and management, hint at the potential for good. That subtle shift alone probably doesn’t account for how much safer I felt in Sonoma than in other parts of California. But I’m happy to report, Sonoma does feel as safe as a place can right now in the USA in terms of travel. Locals keep an appropriate distance, everyone wears masks and cleanliness is taken seriously. Businesses adhere to rules designed to keep everyone safe. And everyone I met was so happy to learn I was a tourist who valued all of that. 😊 For more on the practices of Kind and Sonoma as well as more ideas about responsible travel right now, I’m going to link to some articles in my Stories as I continue to share my day to day there and this is all archived in my profile as a Highlight called ā€˜Sonoma’ so you can reference later too. šŸ• Kind provided my hotel stays and all expenses were mine. ā¤ļø #travelkindly #lifeopensup #sonomacounty #kindtraveler

I knew it would be surreal and maybe a bit foolish, but I had no clue it would be this beautiful & empty. We are 300KM into our 900KM+ journey through Iceland’s interior East-West. Today was the slowest I have ever moved on a bike & I’m grateful because it allowed us to appreciate this landscape on a granular level. We rode and pushed our bikes at a snails pace through ancient sand dunes, snow, glacial rivers and sharp volcanic rock. We moved through Iceland’s most recent eruption. Avoiding freshly formed lava rock with our tires. So far a few broken bits and pieces, some sore muscles and huge smiles.
